Amazon Account Management

Why Most Amazon Sellers
Are Losing Money
Without Even Knowing It

Most Indian Amazon sellers think their biggest problem is competition. It isn't. It's their own account. Suppressed listings they don't know about. PPC campaigns running on autopilot with zero structure. Account health warnings that are three strikes away from a suspension. A₹ 6,000-a-month software subscription they bought eight months ago and haven't logged into since. This article is about all of it - the real, unglamorous work of Amazon account management that separates sellers who plateau at ₹2–3 lakh/month from those who break ₹10 lakh/month and stay there.

01

What "Account Management" Actually Means

Ask ten Amazon sellers what account management means and most will say "managing ads." That's like saying running a restaurant means cooking. It's part of it - but it's not even half of it.

Amazon account management covers every operational layer of your seller presence: listing health, catalogue accuracy, inventory and FBA metrics, performance notifications, A+ content, PPC structure and bid logic, pricing hygiene, review management, and account health. Miss any one of these consistently and the others start to decay.

3.4×

₹1.8L
average monthly revenue lost to poor campaign structure per mid-size seller

These aren't abstract problems. Here's what they look like in practice.

Real Scenario - Listing Suppression

Rakesh's Copper Bottle ASIN, Pune

Rakesh sells kitchenware. His copper water bottle was his bestselling ASIN - consistently ₹80,000–₹90,000 in monthly revenue. In February, Amazon suppressed it because the product description had a health claim ("improves digestion") that violates Amazon's restricted claims policy. The listing went invisible. Rakesh didn't receive an email. He saw sales drop and assumed it was seasonality. He kept running Sponsored Products ads on the suppressed ASIN - spending ₹12,000 in two weeks on an ad that clicked through to a page customers couldn't buy from.

He came to us six weeks later. The fix took 40 minutes: remove the health claim, update the description, submit reinstatement. The real cost? Six weeks of lost organic rank that took another two months to rebuild.

₹4.8L in estimated lost revenue from a 40-minute fix.

02

The Listing Quality Problem Nobody Talks About

Amazon's A9 algorithm (and its newer A10 iteration) ranks listings based on relevance and performance. Relevance is determined almost entirely by your listing content - title, bullet points, backend keywords, and description. Most sellers wrote their listings once, at launch, and haven't touched them since.

Title Architecture

Amazon gives you 200 characters for a title. The average Indian seller uses 60–80 characters and writes something like: "Copper Water Bottle 1 Litre - Good Quality." The top-ranking seller in the same category writes: "Copper Water Bottle 1 Litre for Drinking | 100% Pure Copper | Leak-Proof Lid | BIS Certified | For Home, Office & Gym Use."

Both sell copper bottles. One of them appears on page one. The other doesn't appear until page four.

Backend Keywords: The Invisible Layer

Backend search terms are hidden from shoppers but read by Amazon's indexing engine. You get 250 bytes. Most sellers fill this with the same keywords already in their title (wasted space) or leave it half empty. The right approach is to use this field exclusively for secondary search terms, regional language transliterations, alternate spellings, competitor brand terms (where permitted), and use-case keywords not in your visible content.

"We indexed a Gujarat-based seller's brass diya listing for 14 new keywords - including 'puja thali accessories' and 'navratri decoration' - just through backend keyword restructuring. Organic sessions went up 38% in three weeks without touching a single ad."

Bullet Points Are a Conversion Tool, Not a Spec Sheet

Five bullet points. That's your entire opportunity to turn someone who clicked your listing into someone who buys it. The mistake sellers make is using bullets to describe the product instead of justifying the purchase.

Element What Most Sellers Write What Actually Converts
Bullet 1 Material: Premium copper, 1 litre capacity Stays leak-proof in your bag - tested at 45° angle for 24 hours
Bullet 2 Good for health and digestion Ayurvedic copper storage - water stored overnight develops natural alkalinity
Bullet 3 Easy to clean Wide-mouth design fits a bottle brush - cleans in under 60 seconds
Bullet 4 Suitable for office and gym 1 kg weight - lighter than steel, tougher than plastic. Fits standard car cupholders
Bullet 5 Available in multiple sizes Backed by our 30-day no-questions return policy and 1-year manufacturer warranty

FBA vs. Self-Ship: A Decision Most Sellers Get Wrong

Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) is not always better. But the sellers who use self-ship exclusively are almost always making that choice for the wrong reason: they're afraid of the FBA fee structure or haven't done the actual margin math.

Here's what the decision actually depends on: your product weight and dimensions, your average selling price, your storage turnover rate, and your target delivery SLA for the customer.

Real Scenario - FBA vs Self-Ship Cost Analysis

Meena's Scented Candles, Surat

Meena was self-shipping all her candle orders from a small dispatch unit in Surat. She was proud of her 97% on-time rate. What she hadn't calculated: her self-ship cost per order including packaging, courier, handling, and failed delivery re-attempts averaged ₹148. Her selling price was ₹399. Her FBA cost for the same SKU (based on size and weight tier) was ₹89 per unit, including the pick-and-pack fee.

She was spending ₹59 more per order on self-ship than FBA would have cost - plus, her listings didn't carry the Prime badge, which reduces conversion rate by an average of 22% on competitive categories.

We moved her top 8 SKUs to FBA. Within 45 days, conversion rate increased, she was eligible for Prime Day and Diwali deals, and her monthly orders nearly doubled - at better margins.

Net margin improvement of ₹11 per unit × 1,400 units/month = ₹15,400/month from one operational decision.

When Self-Ship Still Makes Sense

FBA is not always the answer. Self-ship is better when:

⚠ Watch Out

FBA long-term storage fees kick in at 365 days. We've seen sellers with slow-moving seasonal inventory accumulate ₹30,000–₹60,000 in storage fees on products worth ₹40,000. Always run a removal order for slow-moving FBA stock before the annual storage fee date.

PPC: The Part Where Most Money Gets Wasted

Amazon PPC is where we see the most egregious waste across every account we audit. Not because sellers are careless - but because Amazon's advertising console makes it very easy to set up a campaign in five minutes and very hard to understand why it's not working three months later.

The Auto Campaign Trap

Auto campaigns are easy. Amazon picks the targets for you. And for the first 2–3 weeks of a new ASIN, auto campaigns are genuinely useful - they generate search term data you can mine for your manual campaigns.

The problem is sellers leave auto campaigns running for months, spending ₹500–₹2,000/day on them, without ever harvesting the data or pausing the irrelevant targets. We've audited accounts where auto campaigns were the only campaign type, running at ₹60,000/month, with an ACoS of 82%.

Real Scenario - PPC Restructure

Dinesh's Stationery Brand, Ahmedabad

Dinesh had three products. Total monthly PPC spend: ₹1.1 lakh. ACoS: 67%. He'd hired a freelancer who "managed" the campaigns by checking them twice a month.

We audited the account. There were 14 campaigns - 12 of them auto campaigns with no negative keyword lists and no bid segmentation. His bestselling product, a spiral notebook, was spending ₹18,000/month targeting "pen" and "pencil" - search terms with zero intent to buy a notebook. Nobody searching for "blue ball pen" is in the market for a ₹249 notebook.

We restructured into three campaign types per ASIN: a tightly controlled manual exact-match campaign targeting his proven converting terms, a manual broad-match campaign to find new high-intent terms, and one auto campaign at reduced budget for discovery. Negative keyword lists were built from 4 months of irrelevant search term data.

After 60 days: spend was ₹72,000 (down from ₹1.1 lakh), attributed sales were up 14%, and ACoS dropped from 67% to 28%.

₹38,000/month in saved ad spend + ₹92,000 in incremental monthly sales.

Bid Logic: What Actually Moves Rank

Bids on Amazon don't just control spend - they influence where your ad appears, which affects click-through rate, which influences organic rank. Top-of-search placement converts at 2–3× the rate of rest-of-search and product pages. Most sellers set flat bids across all placement types, which means they're paying for poor placements at the same rate as premium ones.

The right structure uses placement bid adjustments: higher multipliers on top-of-search for your proven converters, lower bids on product page placements until conversion data justifies increasing them.

The Keyword Funnel

Amazon keywords exist on a spectrum of purchase intent. Managing a PPC account well means having a strategy for each level:

05

Account Health: The Warning System Most Sellers Ignore Until It's Too Late

Amazon's Account Health Dashboard sits in Seller Central under "Performance." Most sellers open it when they get an email saying something is wrong. By then, they're usually two or three violations deep into a suspension risk.

The Three Metrics That Get Accounts Suspended

Real Scenario - Suspension Recovery

Farida's Ethnic Wear Store, Jaipur

Farida's account was suspended during peak wedding season - October - because her ODR crossed 1.2%. The trigger was a batch of 11 A-to-Z claims filed in one week: a supply-side delay caused her to ship dupatta orders 5–7 days late, and customers filed claims when their orders didn't arrive before their weddings. Amazon suspended her within 72 hours of her ODR crossing the threshold.

We drafted a Plan of Action (POA) that addressed three things Amazon's performance team specifically looks for: the root cause (clearly stated, not minimized), the immediate corrective actions taken, and the systemic process changes that prevent recurrence. Generic apology letters don't work - Amazon's review team reads hundreds of them per day and can spot a template immediately.

Her account was reinstated in 9 days. The appeal we drafted cited specific order IDs, explained the courier delay with corroborating dispatch timestamps, and committed to FBA enrollment for all fast-moving SKUs to remove the late-shipment variable entirely.

Account reinstated in 9 days. She enrolled 28 SKUs in FBA within two weeks of reinstatement.

Intellectual Property (IP) Complaints - A Growing Problem

Amazon takes IP complaints seriously, and they've made it very easy for brand owners (and bad actors) to file them against seller accounts. An IP complaint - whether valid or not - can get your listing taken down within hours. Three unresolved IP complaints can get your entire selling account suspended.

We've seen sellers receive IP complaints from brands they've never heard of, for products they sourced through legitimate wholesale channels. The resolution path requires proactive communication: contact the complainant directly, provide invoice documentation proving legitimate sourcing, or file a counter-notice if the complaint is without merit. None of this is obvious from inside Seller Central.

06

Reviews: What You Can Do and What Amazon Will Ban You For

Reviews are the single most powerful conversion signal on Amazon. A product with 200 reviews at 4.3★ will outsell an otherwise identical product with 20 reviews at 4.6★ in almost every category. The velocity and quantity of reviews matters as much as the rating itself.

The Only Legitimate Review Strategies

⚠ What Will Get You Permanently Banned

Incentivised reviews (offering discounts, refunds, or free products in exchange for reviews), buying reviews from third-party services, having friends and family review your products, and "review swapping" with other sellers are all grounds for permanent account termination - not a warning, not a suspension, a permanent ban. Amazon's detection systems are sophisticated. We've seen accounts with 10 years of selling history banned overnight for review manipulation. It's not worth it.

07

Amazon Brand Registry: Why Every Serious Seller Should Enrol

Brand Registry isn't just for large brands. Any seller with a trademarked brand - even a small one - should be enrolled. Here's what you unlock:

"We enrolled a Delhi-based seller of handmade leather wallets in Brand Registry and built their A+ Content and Brand Store in two weeks. Their conversion rate on the main ASIN went from 9.2% to 13.8% - with zero change in traffic. That's ₹60,000+ in monthly revenue from design work alone."

5 Things to Audit in Your Account This Week

01
Go to Manage Inventory → Filter by "Suppressed." If any ASINs appear there, fix them before you do anything else. Running ads on suppressed listings is burning cash on listings nobody can buy from.
02
Open your top ASIN on your phone, in incognito mode. Read the title, bullets, and images as a first-time customer. Would you buy it? If the answer is "maybe," that's a no. Rewrite until the answer is yes.
03
Download your Search Term Report from Bulk Reports. Filter for spend greater than ₹500 and zero orders. Every keyword on that list is money you've already spent and got nothing for. Add them all to your negative keyword list today.
04
Check your Account Health Dashboard. If your ODR, Late Shipment Rate, or Valid Tracking Rate has even a yellow warning indicator - take it seriously now. These metrics move fast and Amazon acts faster than most sellers expect.
05
Use the "Request a Review" button on your last 30 days of orders. It takes 10 minutes. If you're not doing this systematically, your review velocity is slower than it needs to be - and your competitors probably are doing it.
