Every year, the weeks leading up to the ITR filing deadline turn into a sprint for chartered accountants across India. The ones who planned their digital presence early win. This is the story of one CA firm in Surat that ran their first Google Ads campaign - and what happened when they did.
Eight Years of Referrals, Zero Digital Presence
The firm had been in business for over 8 years, built entirely on word-of-mouth. They had no website traffic to speak of, no Google Business Profile, and no way to reach business owners who were actively searching online for ITR filing help.
Their window was narrow - roughly six weeks before the deadline - and they needed leads fast. They couldn't wait months for SEO to kick in. Google Ads was the right tool for the job.
ITR filing is a high-intent, time-sensitive search. People actively type "CA in Surat for ITR filing" into Google when they need help. Meta ads interrupt people who aren't looking - Google captures people who already are. For professional services with a deadline, search always wins.
Precision Over Volume
The first decision was keyword selection. Instead of bidding on broad terms like "CA near me" or "tax filing" - which attract students, job seekers, and people looking for free tools - we focused on high-intent, location-specific phrases that signal someone is ready to hire.
The core keyword clusters we targeted:
- "ITR filing Surat" and variants - direct intent, local modifier
- "Income tax return filing for business Surat" - filtered to business owners specifically
- "CA for GST return Surat" - captured adjacent tax compliance searches
- "Chartered accountant Surat fees" - lower volume but very high commercial intent
Every keyword had a corresponding negative keyword list. We excluded: "free ITR filing", "how to file ITR myself", "ITR filing software", and "CA jobs Surat". These exclusions alone eliminated roughly 35% of irrelevant impressions and kept cost-per-click low.
Three Tiers, One Budget
We structured the campaign across three ad groups, each targeting a different layer of intent. Running them separately let us see exactly where leads were coming from and allocate spend accordingly.
| Tier | Targeting Focus | Volume | Conversion Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Branded + Location Firm's service category in Surat city specifically |
Lowest | Highest |
| Tier 2 | Service Keywords ITR filing, GST compliance, business tax returns - filtered with negatives |
Highest | Medium |
| Tier 3 | Competitor Adjacent People searching for other CA firms in Surat who hadn't yet committed |
Medium | Medium |
Geography was set tightly to Surat city and the immediate surrounding area. We excluded districts where the firm couldn't realistically serve clients - this kept every click relevant and prevented wasted spend on enquiries the firm couldn't convert.
Total monthly ad budget: ₹12,000. Management covered campaign setup, weekly optimisation, and call tracking integration so we could attribute phone calls back to specific keywords.
One CTA. No Distractions.
Traffic is only half the equation. Where you send that traffic decides whether you get leads or just clicks.
We built a dedicated landing page - not the firm's homepage - with a single purpose: get the visitor to call or send a WhatsApp message. The page had:
- A clear headline matching the ad copy ("ITR Filing for Businesses in Surat")
- Three bullet points explaining the service, turnaround time, and pricing range
- A prominent phone number and click-to-WhatsApp button above the fold
- A short contact form as a secondary option for people who preferred not to call
- Load time under 2 seconds - critical for mobile users on 4G
No sliders. No about pages. No blog links. Just the offer and the next step. This single-CTA approach consistently outperforms multi-option pages for service businesses with a specific seasonal offer.
43 Leads. 18 Clients. ₹63,000 in New Revenue.
In 6 weeks, the campaign delivered results that exceeded what the firm had projected from a full quarter of referral activity:
The remaining 25 leads that didn't convert during the campaign window included people who were still deciding, who needed follow-up, or who booked through a different channel after seeing the ad. Several of these converted in the weeks after the campaign ended.
Three Decisions That Drove the Results
1. Geography before keywords
Most first-time advertisers think about keywords first and location second. We reversed this. Setting the geography tightly to areas where the firm could actually serve clients meant every rupee of ad spend reached a potentially convertible prospect. Broad geographic targeting burns budget on impressions from people who will never become clients.
2. Negative keywords as a first-class priority
The negative keyword list was built before the campaign launched, not after the first week's data came in. "Free", "software", "DIY", "jobs" - these exclusions protected the budget from day one. A campaign without a robust negative keyword list is like a bucket with holes: you can keep pouring spend in, but a significant portion leaks out on worthless clicks.
3. A landing page built for one action
Sending Google Ads traffic to a homepage is one of the most common and expensive mistakes local businesses make. The homepage tries to do too many things. A dedicated landing page with a single call-to-action consistently converts at 3–5× the rate of a homepage for the same traffic.
If you run a professional services business with a seasonal spike - tax season, wedding season, academic admissions, festive retail - Google Ads is one of the fastest ways to fill your calendar during that window. The key is precision over volume: tight geography, high-intent keywords, aggressive negative lists, and a landing page that does one thing well.
