If you've ever posted a beautifully designed image on Instagram and gotten 40 likes, then uploaded a shaky phone video that hit 4,000 views, you already know the answer intuitively. But we wanted data. We pulled 3 months of analytics across 14 managed client accounts - local businesses across Surat, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara - and compared Reels to static image posts head to head.
What 3 Months of Analytics Actually Showed
14 accounts. 3 months. Every post tagged by format. Here's what the numbers said:
The gap was even more pronounced for smaller accounts. For pages with under 1,000 followers, Reels averaged 9× more non-follower reach than image posts in the same period. In plain terms: Instagram is aggressively pushing Reels to people who don't follow you. Image posts mostly reach people who already do.
This is not a coincidence - it's deliberate platform design. Instagram's Explore and Reels feed are built to surface video content to new audiences. The image feed is primarily a follower feed. If you're a local business trying to reach new customers in your city, you are fighting the algorithm with every image-only post.
Instagram makes money from time-on-app. Reels keep people watching longer than static images. So Instagram pushes Reels harder. Your content strategy should follow the platform's incentives, not fight them.
Reels, Images, and Carousels - Each Has a Job
The data doesn't mean image posts are useless. It means they serve a different purpose. The best-performing accounts in our data used all three formats - but strategically, not randomly.
The accounts that grew fastest combined all three: Reels for reach (getting in front of new people), carousels for depth (educating and building trust), and single images for consistency (staying present in the follower feed between bigger posts).
The Reels That Got the Most Reach
Not all Reels are equal. Across the 14 accounts, the top-performing Reels shared four consistent traits. The bottom-performing ones shared four consistent mistakes.
| Element | What worked | What didn't |
|---|---|---|
| Opening hook | "We transformed this kitchen for ₹40,000" - specific, surprising, local | "Interior Design Services in Surat" - generic, no reason to keep watching |
| Duration | 15–30 seconds - higher completion rate, which the algorithm rewards directly | 60–90 seconds - drop-off spikes after 20 seconds on most local business content |
| Local context | Mentioning Surat / Gujarat, showing recognisable local areas - increased saves and shares | Generic visuals with no location signals - lower relevance score in local feed |
| Audio | Trending audio tracks - consistently outperformed original or no audio across all accounts | Original recorded voiceover or silence - lower distribution in Reels feed |
The hook is everything
On average, a viewer decides whether to keep watching a Reel within the first 1.5–2 seconds. Everything after that is secondary. The single most impactful change any local business can make to their Reels is improving the first frame.
A bold text overlay that creates curiosity or surprise consistently outperforms a logo intro or a slow establishing shot. Test these formats:
- The contrast hook: "Most [profession] in Surat do X. Here's why we don't."
- The number hook: "We completed 47 projects in Surat this year. Here's the most common mistake we fixed."
- The before hook: Show the "before" state in the first frame - people stay to see the after.
- The question hook: "Is your [product/service] costing you more than it should?" - makes the viewer self-identify.
Reach Is Not Revenue
This is the part most social media guides skip. Reach is a vanity metric if it doesn't connect to a business outcome.
Across our 14 accounts, we've seen Reels with 50,000 views generate zero leads - and accounts with 800 views generate three paying clients from a single post. What matters is who sees it and what they do next.
A Reel is the top of the funnel. It creates awareness and desire. But desire without a next step is just entertainment. Pair every high-reach Reel with:
- A WhatsApp link in bio - always the primary CTA for local service businesses in India
- A story CTA posted within 24 hours - "DM us for a quote / to book a slot / to ask a question"
- A follow-up image post or carousel - for people who saw the Reel but didn't act immediately, staying in the feed keeps you top of mind
For local businesses starting from scratch, Reels are your fastest path to being discovered by new customers in your city. But reach without a follow-up system is just awareness without revenue. Build both, and the algorithm works for you - not just for Instagram.
